House buyers need more govt assistance

The bad news is, the residential property overhang in the country rose by a significant 30.6% to 32,313 units worth RM19.86 bil in 2018.

The good news is, for the first quarter of 2019, the total value of transactions was up at RM36.97 bil from RM35.17 bil the year before. But it’s too early to know if 2019 would be a better year.

Some say the government-backed Home Ownership Campaign (HOC) from Jan 1 to June 30 will help. The Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (Rehda) expects sales of between RM2 bil and RM3 bil during the HOC. However, property consultants say that’s a tall order.
