Scrutinise multiple project layers

It is good that the government is pulling the brakes on key infrastructure projects which are deemed too expensive and inflated in value.

On July 4, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng clarified that the actual cost of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is a staggering RM81 bil! The previous Barisan Nasional government had stated the cost as RM55 bil.

The additional RM26 bil includes costs which were strangely not included in the project such as extensions to the rail network, upgrading works to include double tracks, and advance payments.

The same goes for the proposed RM110 bil High Speed Rail (HSR) project under the previous government which has now been put on hold. It was reported that the Japanese could do it for as low as RM30 bil.
