Aina Syahirah Azlin and Julie Anne Kang are testament to how people come into your life for a reason. The founders of shoe label, Kulet, first met in primary school and would again cross paths upon joining the work force.

“We became close friends while we were both working for (fashion entrepreneur) Tengku Chanela Jamidah,” recalls Kang, 25. “That was when we discovered how much we had in common.”

“One of our shared passions is minimalist design,” says Aina, 26. “Especially beautiful and simple footwear like ours, which we really couldn’t find here before.”

Officially launched in October 2016, Kulet (www.kulet.co) was an instant hit. The brand’s first collection with its mostly nude colour palette was sold out in six weeks. Although they are now into their third collection – there is a new release every three months – they still receive compliments on their maiden offerings.

Of course, it is more than just an understated aesthetic that sets the shoes apart. As its name suggests, the leather on the shoes is incredibly supple but many would be surprised to find that it is actually ­synthetic, albeit the high quality kind.
